At the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, a team of the African Youth Panel Steering Committee led by its Chair, Ibrahim Ceesay met with Ahmed Alhendawi, the UN Youth Envoy. Other members of the panel on the team included Christiam Kam from Cameroun and Rotimi Olawale from Nigeria.
The meeting initiated by the Panel presented an opportunity for its leadership to update the Youth Envoy on progress it has made in the last 5 years. In the words of the AIYP Chair, ‘The African Youth Panel has risen to become one of the strongest and most vibrant youth network on the continent working closely with the African Union and collaborating effectively with other youth networks on the continent’. Mr. Ceesay pledged the support of the panel in supporting the programs and policies of the youth envoy on the African Continent.
In his response, Mr Alhendawi thanked the visiting team and laid down his plans for the African region which included the setting up of a UN regional Inter-agency Network on Youth Development to deepen the work of the UN with and for youth in Africa. He also said he will be embarking on his first trip to Africa visiting Addis Ababa and Kenya in the coming months as he looks forward to engaging youth groups such as the African Youth Panel in Africa.
Mr. Ceesay on behalf of the Panel extended an invitation to the envoy to take part in its planned Africa Regional Youth Leaders Summit scheduled for May 2013
